It’s normal to worry about what you look like and who you are, especially when you are growing up and everything is changing.

What does having no self-confidence feel like?

You might feel like you’re useless or ugly or rubbish at everything (you’re not!). You may feel shy or embarrassed. You might think no one likes you; even that no one loves you. This can make you feel like you hate who you are and what you look like – even though other people don’t.

It’s actually really common to feel like this and is often called ‘low self-esteem’.

There can be a lot of pressure to look a certain way, but remember people on TV, in films and magazines don’t look like that in real life. Other people may not feel as confident as they seem to on the outside; everyone has their own problems and times when they feel bad about themselves.

"By being yourself, you put something wonderful in the world that was not there before."

- Edwin Elliot

How can having no self-confidence affect me?

Feeling bad about yourself can make it hard to try new things and make new friends. This can stop you from living your life the way you want to.

It can make you feel frustrated and depressed over time. But there are lots of things you can do to make yourself feel better and more self-confident.
